What is a charter school?

According to the Colorado Department of Education a charter school in Colorado is “a public school operated by a group of parents, teachers and/or community members as a semi-autonomous school of choice within a school district…” The school’s charter must lay out the “school goals, standards, education design, governance and operations.”

According to Wikipedia, “Charter schools are publicly funded elementary or secondary schools in the US which have been freed from some of the rules, regulations, and statutes that apply to other public schools in exchange for some type of accountability for producing certain results…”
