Broomfield’s Emergency Management program is currently hosting a 3-week class called “Tornadoes to Terrorists” which amazingly I had the good sense (it happens sometimes) to sign up for. Last night was the first class. The 3 instructors clearly have a wealth of knowledge and experience, the structure of the program is well-tested and highly organized, and the chemistry between the 3 is obvious which makes for a very fun, educational and entertaining class.
The next session will start in the spring (no charge) so if you have the chance I urge you to keep an eye out for it – I’ll of course announce it here – and it will be in the Broomfield Enterprise and on the City of Broomfield’s website – and sign up for it, you won’t regret it!
The focus last night was primarily on establishing a 72-hour Preparedness Kit. The key is adapting that kit to your personal needs. The goal is to put together a kit with which you will be able to get by (or survive) for 72-hours (hint, that’s 3 days). (But as we joked last night, if you live in Broomfield you are smart enough to know that.)
Broomfield may be a highly unlikely place to suffer an international terrorist attack but what if a pipe in the street breaks and floods your house and you’re forced to evacuate for a day or two for instance? Do you have a kit that contains supplies for you, your pets, and your kids?
Remember the blizzard last winter? What if you are unable to get to the store for more supplies? If you have a 72-hour Preparedness Kit you don’t have to worry as much. Will you have enough canned goods, bottled water, meds, pet food, toilet paper, a first aid kit, matches, flashlight, battery-operated radio, and so on.
Do you have emergency supplies in your car in case you’re stranded somewhere? Blankets, coats, sand, a shovel, a flashlight, jumper cables, flares, etc. etc.
Again, the emphasis is on preparing a kit that is specific to your needs.
Did I mention they gave us a flashlight last night that you charge by hand – no batteries necessary – very cool!
