Movie Review: Juno

Posted by admin - February 2nd, 2008

I decided to go see this movie partly because of all the commercials I’ve seen lately (advertising works!) and partly because all the other movies seemed rather sucky.

projector.JPGI didn’t like it so much at first but now that I’ve had more time to digest it I’ve decided it was actually a decent little movie.

The New York Times critic wrote:

The first time I saw “Juno,” I was shocked to find myself tearing up at the end, since I’d spent the first 15 minutes or so gnashing my teeth and checking my watch. The passive-aggressive pseudo-folk songs, the self-consciously clever dialogue, the generic, instantly mockable suburban setting…

and I will say that is exactly right. I found myself thinking, “speed this up!” in the very beginning.

Ellen Page, who plays Juno, while appearing to be a great actress, is hard to swallow as a 16 year old. Granted I might be able to think of one teen I know who has a similar sense of humor/intellect, I have to assume 99.9% of them are not like that. expectations_2.jpg

But it’s a movie and I go to movies to be entertained, not to watch reality, so I work hard to suspend certain beliefs.

And Juno’s parents J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney are just way too cool to be normal parents. They’re the parents you probably wished you had despite the effot to make them seem somewhat dysfunctional.

Hey, it features Jason Batemen as a realistic but screwed up character and what girl my age didn’t have a strange thing for him when he was on The Hogan Family? (Okay so maybe that’s just me…)

So overall I would say it was worth seeing. Definitely worth $5 (if you see it at an AMC Theater Fri-Sun before noon) and I’ll probably rent it when it comes out on DVD too.

Remember that if you view a home with me in the month of February I’ll give you 2 free tickets to see a movie at an AMC Theater. (Tickets that get you in ANY time of the day btw, not just before noon!)
