Okay, so it might seem a bit odd to feature this on a blog about north metro Denver real estate but I thought it was some good advice and interesting to boot so I’m going to blog about it. It was featured on Lifehacker this morning – a fantastic blog by the way and you follow the link to wikiHow “How To Survive A Fall Through Ice.”
Some important points to note:
As soon as you realize you’re doing down, hold your breath so you don’t end up sucking in water.
Do not panic. It uses up needed energy and can defeat you in the end. You likely have 2-5 minutes or perhaps more so use the time wisely.
Try to find the strongest part of the ice – possibly where you were right before you went in and try to either use a kicking motion to help get yourself out or roll out as you are floating on the water. Note that even if you can only get part of your body out, you could freeze there, thus keeping at least part of your body out of the water until help comes. Once you are out don’t just stand up but roll away from the thin ice to try and keep your weight more evenly distributed.
