I drove by the place for years and always wondered if someone still lived there or exactly what the property was being used for. You’ve probably noticed it yourself, tucked back into the corner of 120th & Lowell Blvd – directly across the street from Cross of Christ Lutheran Church and just south of both the Brandywine and Crofton Park neighborhoods.
As of March 2013 it’s officially considered an historic site and is registered with the National Register of Historic Places and Colorado State Register of Historic Properties. The Broomfield Enterprise wrote an article about it in May 2013.
The space is managed by both Broomfield and Westminster and has 2 miles of gravel walking trails. It’s also great for fishing or watching the wide variety of birds that flock there. Yes, dogs are allowed on the trail as long as they are on leash and please make sure you pick up after your dog!
According to Great Outdoors Colorado they helped the cities purchase the 160 acre project by contributing $500,000 in funds. It helped tie together the Big Dry Creek Trail and Open Space Corridor.
The picnic grounds are within sight of the pond and fishing dock where you can watch the wetlands area for all sorts of birds. Owls and hawks often hang out in the trees while Blue Heron can be seen relaxing in the pond area.
While the structures like the house and barn aren’t open to the public, due to unsafe wear and tear, they hope to one day repair the structures and make them available for tours. Another nice thing about this walking trail is the easy parking! A large lot is available along with a porta-potty (always important!) and trash cans.
The City & County of Broomfield put together a nice video highlighting the area’s features and the day the space opened to the public:
