Enjoyed the mild spring weather last night and made a trip to Big Choice Brewing in Broomfield which, disturbingly I had yet to do! If you’re looking for the standard Friday evening bar scene, packed with boisterous 20-somethings you won’t find it here. Big Choice appears to cater to the slightly more “sophisticated” crowd which is not to say that there were a bunch of folks in a suit and tie wheeling and dealing after work either. More mature than the 20-somethings and more relaxed than the after work professional crowd. There were a number of families there with young children, hanging out and socializing as well as the beer aficionado crowd relaxing and enjoying one of the fine micro brews that Colorado is so well known for. Jeans and t-shirts were the uniform of choice.
I had the Marzen Lager which was delicious! Other great choices (get it? Choices?! ha ha!) include Disconnected Red, Poblano Stout, 10,000 Summers Saison, and West Portal Colorado Common.
They have food trucks that park there on any given day and last night was hot dog night! The Suburban Wiener, which turned out to be extra funny when the couple we were chatting with pointed out it was Good Friday. No fish tacos I guess! LOL! Tuesdays are Taco Tuesday.
I had a vegetarian hot dog – the Open Space with chipotle ketchup and mustard and the chipotle ketchup was only a tiny bit spicy. Pretty good – seemed a lot like a veggie burger in the shape of a hot dog. I would get it again.
Big Choice opened in the spring of 2012 and a year later they were even canning beer. They get great reviews on Yelp. Although a number of people have commented that it’s strange to have a brewery in an industrial park. Have they never been to Avery? I think that’s what contributes to the overall atmosphere anyway – not a traditional bar type place that you’ll see in downtown Denver for instance. More for the crowd that is past all that hype and just wants to sit and enjoy a great beer and catch up with old friends or make new ones.
You can follow them on twitter.
To get there if you’re in Broomfield you go west on 120th Ave to Upham which is near all the new construction they’re doing for US 36 – then you go south on Upham until you reach the end of the street and Big Choice is dead ahead in the warehouse area. The first one right on the corner.
