I admit it. I’m a sucker for holiday movies.
A Christmas Story of course. How can you not love a movie where the kid goes to bed clutching his brand new bb gun? LOL! My favorite line is Ralphie talking about his dad’s cussing: “He worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay. It was his true medium; a master.” You can even bid on an auction for charity, to spend Christmas in the actual house it was filmed in. How great would that be? You can spend the night in Randy and Ralphie’s room! Last year’s winning bid only topped $8,000… Yipes! Don’t forget the annual all day marathon on Christmas Day on TNT.
A Christmas Carol but not the screaming, blaring, over done 2009 version from Disney. I prefer the classic 1951 b/w one with Alastair Sim. A true redemption story. Just when the bad guy is convinced it’s too late, it turns out it’s anything but. Same thing with How the Grinch Stole Christmas – the original cartoon version is best. (And it features a dachshund!)
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer because I always loved the way the stop animation and the puppets made the characters look. (And Yukon Cornelius dog sled team has a dachshund in it!) But the Island of Misfit Toys is the best part. Did you know in the original airing, Santa blows off the misfit toys and leaves them on the island? But the tv station was inundated with angry calls and letters, from parents and kids, so starting in 1965, they added the scene where Santa picks them up and finds homes for them.
It’s a Wonderful Life. I’ll have to vote for this one as the best. And I always save it for last every year. The man who wrote the story tried for years to sell it to a publisher with no luck. So he printed up 200 copies (the first self publisher?) and mailed them to friends for Christmas. A producer at RKO pictures happened to see a copy and bought the rights for $10,000.
Enjoy your holiday season!
P.S. Die Hard 1 and 2 are Christmas movies right?
